Since most manufacturers rate their discs' flight characteristics using their own scale measurements, we have created Joe's Universal Flight Chart to help players compare discs across manufacturers in a consistent way. Flight ratings are broken down into the following four categories:

Range (RNG) This is measured on a scale from 1 to 5.5. Range describes the distance that discs are designed to fly compared to other types of discs.

High Speed Stability* (HSS) This is measured on a scale from -3 to +2. The HSS value describes the disc's tendencies during the first part of the flight. A negative value indicates the disc has a tendency to turn (to the right for a RHBH throw) during the early flight. The stronger the value, the more pronounced this turn will be. A positive value indicates the disc will tend to fade (to the left for a RHBH throw) almost immediately. Discs with an HSS rating of zero will tend to fly straight during the first part of its flight.

Low Speed Stability* (LSS) This is measured on a scale from 0 to +5. The LSS describes the disc's tendency to fade (to the left for a RHBH throw) during the later part of the flight. The stronger the value, the more pronounced the fade will be. Discs with an LSS rating of 0 will have a tendency to hold the line it is flying on through the later flight with very little fade.

Power Requirement (PWR) This is measured on a scale from 1 to 6. The PWR rating describes how much throwing power is necessary to make the disc fly as it was intended, i.e., how difficult a disc is to throw.

*These values assume the disc is thrown at its PWR level. An underpowered throw will generally cause the disc's HSS and LSS values to increase in the positive direction, e.g., a player with a PWR 3 who throws a disc with a PWR 6 rating may experience HSS and LSS behaviors that are higher than the disc is rated. An overpowered throw will often cause the disc's HSS and LSS values to decrease, e.g., a player with a PWR 6 who throws a disc with a PWR 3 rating may experience HSS and behaviors that are lower than the disc is rated.
